Custom Ringtones on the Samsung SCH u470 “Juke” for Mac and PC
This guide is how to get custom ringtones on the Samsung Juke, SCH u470 phone, for both Mac and PC

A lot of you have been having problems with my guide, and i’m sorry but I never knew it would get such fanatical response. I just wrote it for anyone, but at the time no one read my blog. Anyway here is the guide.
GUIDE FOR MAC OS X 10.5 VIA BUILT-IN BLUETOOTH
Step 1. Necessary Equipment.
1. Samsung u470 “Juke” Phone.
2. Mac (i’ll be using a Macbook)
3. OS X Built-in Bluetooth
Step 2. Downloading Necessary Files
1. BitPim
2. Audacity (with Lame MP3 Encoder)
3. Stuffit
Step 3. Setting up your phone for bluetooth transfer (Follow Exactly)
*I’m sorry for those of you who do not have built-in bluetooth, I tried to search how to do this with the USB cable but came up short, If you know email me or comment here*
1. To setup your phone you need to put your phone in “Discovery mode”. After that open up Bluetooth Preferences and click the “+” button at the bottom of the window.
2. After you click the “+” a new window will pop up click continue and select “Any Device”.
3. After that you’ll see your phone, as long as it still in “Discovery Mode”, Click on it and proceed.
4. You should see it trying to gather information on your phone, after that a message will pop up on your phone asking you if you want to accept the connection. Click yes then you should see a “Passkey” entry, I typically use four zeros “0000″. Whatever you use remember it.
5. You’ll see it asking for the passkey you just put into your phone on-screen. Enter the passkey and click continue.
6. You should see it determining what services are available for your phone, if any, don’t worry about this just hit continue. It should tell you your phone has been setup and a serial port has been added, this is important.
7. Click Quit and now your phone should be setup, but there is still one more thing to do. Once you get back to the Bluetooth Preferences window, click the button next to the “-” button it should look like a gear, and make sure your settings are like mine.
8. Congrats that’s it your phone linked via bluetooth to your computer.
Step 4. Installing the software
1. You need to download and install Stuffit, don’t worry it’s free.
2. Download and install Bitpim….simple enough.
3. Download Audacity, mount the dmg, and create a new folder called “Audacity” in your application directory.
4. Go ahead and copy the stuff in the dmg into the “Audacity” folder you just created.
5. Now go download the Lame MP3 Encoder, this is also where you need Stuffit.
6. Extract the zip file, and copy the “libmp3lame.dylib” and paste it into the “plug-ins” folder in your recently created “Audacity” folder.
7. Everything should be installed now to set everything up.
Step 5. Configuring all the software.
1. Open up Audacity, and decide what song you want to have as a ringtone. After that edit it down to around 30 sec., and click Export as MP3, it will ask you to find the “libmp3lame.dylib” which should be in your “plug-ins” folder in the “Audacity” folder in Applications. It will also ask you to convert it, I usually just select 128kbps and convert.
2. I would save your newly created mp3 to your desktop.
3. Now open up BitPim, It will try to auto-detect your phone but it won’t be able to.
4. Click the Screwdriver and Wrench icon in the BitPim toolbar, and Change your phone type to SCH-u470.
5. Your not done with this yet. In the BitPim Settings window, across from where it says Com Port click “Browse…” and choose “SCH-u470-SerialPort-1″.
Step 6. Downloading and Uploading Ringtones and Pictures.
1. Now your done with the settings, exit that window and click the icon that has a phone with an arrow going out of it. Click the check box next to everything you’d like for it to download to your computer in BitPims database, then click OK. It will begin to download what you checked.
2. Once it’s done, expand “Media” and click “Ringers”, then click the icon with a musical note with a + on it. Browse to your song, and choose it. *NOTE* For wallpapers or pictures, just click “Images” instead and click the picture with a + on it and choose your image.
3. Once your done adding all your ringtones (or pictures), click the phone with an arrow going into it. Click the checkbox next to what you just changed and whether to “add” or “replace all”. Then click OK. It will begin to upload all the changes to your phone.
4. Once it’s done uploading, your phone will automatically reset and all your ringers (or pictures) will be available on your phone. Congrats!
GUIDE FOR PC WINDOWS XP VIA USB CABLE
Step 1. Necessary Equipment
1. Samsung u470 “Juke” Phone
2. A PC Desktop or Laptop with one available USB port
3. The provided USB cable
Step 2. Downloading Necessary Files (DO NOT RUN ANY)
1. Samsung USB Driver (MCCI 4.34) WHQL v3.0.zip
2. BitPim
3. Audacity (with Lame MP3 Encoder)
Step 3. Installing the Software
1. Extract the Samsung Drivers folder to your desktop and run the Setup. You may have to restart, if so, do it.
2. After you restart, install BitPim. Not hard at all.
3. Then install Audacity. This is for editing your songs down to little 30 sec. clips.
4. To export your newly edited music, you’ll need to also need the Lame MP3 Encoder, so extract that from the zip to your desktop as well.
5. You will need to drag and drop the “Lame_enc.dll” into your Audacity Plug-in folder.
6. Everything should be installed now.
Step 4. Configuring the Software
1. Open up Audacity, and decide what song you want to have as a ringtone. After that edit it down to around 30 sec., and click Export as MP3, it will ask you to find the “lame_enc.dll” which should be in your “plug-ins” folder in the “Audacity” folder in Program Files.
2. I would save your newly created mp3 to your desktop.
3. Now open up BitPim, It may try to auto-detect your phone but it won’t be able to.
4. We are about to connect the phone to the USB cable but before we do we must change an internal setting in the phone. Hit “Menu”, and go to “Settings & Tools” (or hit 6) and hit the “#” key, it will ask for a 6 digit password, it should be six zeros “000000″. Be very careful not to change anything else here. Go to “MTP Settings” (or hit 3) and select “MSM”. This will allow your phone’s modem port to kick in. After that hit “End” and you should see a message that says “Music Sync Not Allowed“. If you see that then your good to go.
5. Connect the phone to the USB cable.
6. Click the Screwdriver and Wrench icon in the BitPim toolbar, and Change your phone type to SCH-u470.
7. Your not done with this yet. In the BitPim Settings window, across from where it says Com Port click “Browse…” and choose “SAMSUNG CDMA Modem Diagnostic Serial Port (WDM)”.
Step 5. Uploading and Downloading Ringtones and Pictures.
It will also ask you to convert it, I usually just select 128kbps and convert. *NOTE* For wallpapers or pictures, just click “Images” instead and click the picture with a + on it and choose your image.
3. Yeah, I know my song choice was nerdy but it’s a demo. Once your done adding all your ringtones (or pictures), click the phone with an arrow going into it. Click the checkbox next to what you just changed and whether to “add” or “replace all”. Then click OK. It will begin to upload all the changes to your phone.
4. Once it’s done uploading, your phone will automatically shut off. Unplug it and turn it back on.
5. Now we need to do one last step, turn off the “MSM” and get rid of the “Music Sync Not Allow” Message. Click “Menu”, and go back to “Settings & Tools” (or hit 6) and hit the “#” key. The password should be six zeros “000000″. Click “MTP Setting” (or hit 3). Now select “MTP”. After that hit “End” and you shouldn’t see that message anymore and your phone will work normally.
6. You should see all your ringtones and pictures in their respective places now. Congrats!
*NOTE: You must change the MTP Setting back and forth everytime you want to add new things to your phone*

Thank you very much for this guide, it works very well. One little comment would be that following the above left me with the message “Music Sync Not Allowed” still showing on my phone, reversing the MTP Setting back to original setting got rid of this and all works 100%. Thanks again.
I forgot to mention this, you have to set the phone to MTP to show as a modem to allow BitPim to communicate with it, and you have to set it back to MSM if you want to sync music back on it.
Thank you for the comment!
Yeah i got a problem on ringtones…
it says add it on mr .. but … how do you add… because i dragged it in and like nothing worked… and then i get this huge screen saying aport… help?
Could you email me a screenshot?
Email: localretard@gmail.com
Thanks works great!
I have a problem w/ Step 3 paragraph 3 – i cannot “extract” the ’self extracting exe’ file w/out simply running it. I tried a few utilities and none worked. (7-zip, stuffit)
I am using Win XP SP2. I also have Vista available if that would help. Please let me know how to accomplish this step.
Thank you!
problem solved – i was able to find the temp directory for the verizon installation at C:\Documents and Settings\[USER]\Local Settings\Temp\SEA29
Thank you so much for this walk through!! It is awesome!
I have Vista and the latest BitPim which supports the Juke, so I was able to skip the hex bits (and just use image and ringers features) but I spent 1 hour on tech support w/ Verizon trying to connect this thing to my PC. We all finally gave up. I was prepared to return it to the store when I found your article! THANK YOU! You really nailed how to get the device to communicate with my PC and you saved the fate of my Juke, and me having to downgrade to a less tempermental phone!
what’s mr folder? i was looking all over my computer folders and still don’t get what it means…
I got the mr.. and still working on it
Thanx Much for posting this wonderful info.
I was soooo bummed when I got my Juke that I couldn’t set my music as ringtones or upload pics like that…this info was AWESOME! Thanks:)
I want to thank all of you for posting such wonderful comments. A little update to this, the newest version of BitPim now natively supports this, so you don’t have to choose “Other CDMA Phone.”
i am also having trouble with the 3rd step i cannot extract the music manager .exe file on my computer to a folder or where the common folder is, i am running windows vista home edition. please let me no what im doing wrong. thanks
Thanks for the info and step-by-step instructions, great stuff!
nvm got it
Localretard you are a genius! I got all my pictures without wasting my pic messages.
Thanks for this step by step info. I could get my favorite ringtone on my phone. Just one thing, I didn’t require the “Verizon music manager” in the whole process…!
I’m not sure why it was needed but this was the way that I did it a while back, since then programs have been updated to accommodate the “Juke.”
hey man, great guide about custom ringtones. i appreciate you making it. i have a question about deleting songs off your juke. i read that u must connect it using the verizon music manager but everytime i plug my phone into my computer it never registers the music manager as a way to open the juke. when im in music manager it says that the juke isnt connected. any help would be nice.
Are you talking about songs that you downloaded off the vcast service songs you put on yourself, or ringtones?
I went through the instructions once and it worked perfectly. Then I decided to go back in and add more ringtones…but the mrinfo.db file stopped showing up. And now I think I’ve lost even that first ringtone. I don’t know what I’ve done.
I’ve never encountered this, however my best guess is to disconnect and connect it back again.
For anyone else, it might be a good idea to keep a backup of the mrinfo.db on our computer.
I will go through this soon, and revise it, also add a guide for bluetooth.
Hey, something cool to make sure your ringtones are optimized… in itunes, set up your preferences then go to advanced tab, then import, then set as follows for perfect sized ringtones…
mp3 encoder, settings custom (in the popup… 96 kbps, 44.100khz, mono (mono is good for cell phone’s 1 loudspeaker) then hit ok)
also for each track that you want to use, click get info, set the volume to 100+, then set the time to start and stop.
once u set up the track’s “get info” right click and then convert selection to mp3.
after i finished converting i sent them to my phone and rebooted and hexedited the db file and picked up on the instructions from there. enjoy guys.
Alright i got all of this to work, btw…thank you very much…however i’ve run into an almost critical error..
now when i go into music mode…all my MP3’s are listed as gone (0’s on everything), however when i go into my memory settings..713 mb are still there…
i modified nothing out of what your tutorial says. I hook it up to my windows tower, and it says the memory is being used, but no songs. I run VMM, and it says my phone isn’t connected to the computer, when it blatantly is. To top it all off…
when i hook the phone into my powerbook without VMM or the drivers, i can open up the phone, and read all the mp3’s as still there…so i deleted them, and put new ones on there hoping it was just a “loss” issue. When i did THAT and disconnected the phone and such, reboot it, and checked, it still listed as no songs in the database, however it does show the memory being used up.
any ideas?! i mainly use this phone as an mp3 player during the day on my walks to the university and would love to have it back as such, even at the cost of custom ringtones and such.
thank you in advance
What I would suggest is to take off whatever ringtones you had added and put a clean (non-edited) MrInfo.db back on the phone. Reboot, and check.
I’m not sure how you put your mp3’s on your phone, I used Windows Media Player not VMM, as many have stated VMM isn’t necessary but at the time I wrote the guide it was how I did it but I still used Windows Media Player to put music on my phone.
i tried that…and the way i put mp3’s on the phone nomrally…was to browse the folder of the phone (pre-driver install since the phone is/was plug n’ play) and just open the mp3 folder and drag-drop…
i’ll try doing it via Windows media player or VMM thanks..
i think it my have to do with the Music Sync thing too…who knows..
thanks though!
What do you mean by extract.?
It would be easier if you were to email me at:
electric_sid@yahoo.com
thank you
Excellent write up! Using the new version of BITPIM, life is much easier (many of the steps above are no longer required!)
Question – do you know where the Samsung 64 bit Vista drivers are? The ones only listed above only work on 32 bit OS (XP and Vista).
i keep getting a exception error when i try to convert the file i want to use as a ringtone?!help!
Hey is there anyway to extract the musics on my phone onto my computer?
Also is there a way to grab the pictures on my phone as well?
Lastlyyy do you know of any good program that sync your music volumes so that they stay consistent and don’t have those low musics followed by sudden loud musics (requiring me to keep adjusting the volume of my speakers)
thanks and sry for the so many questionss
[...] Custom Ringtones on Samsung Juke useful? [...]
Would you know how to upload pictures from the Juke, Samsung phone to my PC? Thanks a lot.
-Eliza
Use BitPim to download the pictures off the Juke onto the PC.
about the verizon music manager part.. which one do i download once i click the link? i downloaded the driver and i couldn’t find the ‘common’ folder.
I must be doing something horribly wrong because this whole process has made two phones crap out (forcing me to replace them).
It seemed to do so after adding about four (30 sec.) songs as ringtones.
What am I doing to break my phone?
…by the way, it’s making my phone turn on and off repeatedly. HELP!
To anyone who reads this:
This guide is horribly outdated, I will re-write it soon.
@rina
Refer to above
@Beth
I’m truly sorry my guide had that impact on your phone. This next comment isn’t directed at you as i’m sure you know, this guide was meant to be used at your own risk because editing the mrinfo.db wrong can mess up your phone. I hope that also answers your question. But I will re-write this guide into a more professional manner for both mac and pc. However still to be used at the owners own risk.
Oh!
I think I did something out of order as far as the mrinfo goes… would that have messed up my phone?
They’re great instructions! I think it was just user-error.
Mac and PC guides are up, comment or email me if I missed anything. Thanks guys!
Wait?? u changed the guide???
cause i just reformat my computer and i came back here to do the same thing…but the guide is diferent..in a way easier??? is anything going to happen with my old ringtone with this new way??
No as long as you download your data from your phone to your pc, the old ringtones should be ok.
This is an updated guide, yes it is way easier. It also includes instructions for Mac and PC
Wow! This new format is WAY easier then it was when I did this back in June. You rock! Thank you!
I found 64-bit windows drivers for the Juke at http://www.planetamd64.com/lofiversion/index.php?t32769.html
Just click on the link for Samsung CDMA drivers. They work for me on 64-bit Vista.
You are awesome. I want to make you cookies. Thank you so much!!!
I don’t know why but when I followed your guide, I couldn’t dowload the phone info into bitpim (comp). It said “exception” and there were 4 options: abort/help/continue/report.
Help pls. Thankx in advance.
OH I firgured out how ^^ silly me. But it’s weird that audacity can’t open .wma files. T_T
hey anyone get this error message when installing bitpim?
“This application failed to start because MSVCP71.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem.” I have no clue as to what is going on?
I google’d that DLL and it seems to do with a C++ Runtime. My best guess is to make sure you have installed all the Microsoft .NET frameworks via Windows Update. Hope that helps!
Hey ive just recieved a hand-me-down mac fairly new. it doesnt have built in bluetooth, is it possible to do it with a bluetooth usb adapter?
Yes, obviously make sure you get a usb bluetooth adapter that is mac compatible then follow the basic instructions listed, it might vary since you might be using 3rd party hardware.
In Step 7: 7. Your not done with this yet. In the BitPim Settings window, across from where it says Com Port click “Browse…” and choose “SAMSUNG CDMA Modem Diagnostic Serial Port (WDM)”.,
I do not see Samsung CDMA Modern Diangostic Serial Port as an option.
My phone did say “Music Sync Not allowed” after step 6. What did I do wrong?
Check all your connections, make sure they are tight. I’ve had to wiggle USB connections around before. If that doesn’t solve the problem. restart your computer. If that still doesn’t solve it…start from the beginning? I don’t know.
Great post… and really like the rest of the site – btw you’ll love this image – http://imagerb.com/?p=184
I need help my Bluetooth just let me send contacts as edit files to help please send is like samsung juke posting down or do admin help please?
I’m sorry, I don’t understand. Please screen capture what you are talking about and send it to me via email. localretard@gmail.com
Thanks for answering, the problem is this:
Bluetooth just send my contacts to other Bluetooth devices and not files or images.
Now my question is, How do I change my Bluetooth so you can send files and images, and not just hope that contacts will understand me?.
From what your saying, I think this can be done via BitPim (you can download the contents of your phone onto your PC/Mac and upload any changed content back to your phone). If your talking about bluetooth phone connecting to another bluetooth phone, then I don’t know.
If the phone to another Bluetooth phone do not know how to make your files and not just contacts?
because it is bluetooth phone to bluetooth computer. I make the files on the computer, and put them from the PC to the phone.
and as I do that? and files that I have to climb with that program and what can I do help …
Like the guide shows, you use the program BitPim to transfer the files from the PC to the phone. I think that answers your questions. I’m having a difficult time understanding your grammar.
si perdon es que solo hablo español, y entonces estoy traduciendo con el translate.google.com, pero que archivos tengo que subir a mi cel?
If forgiveness is that I speak only Spanish, and then I’m translating the translate.google.com, but I have to upload files to my cell?
Yes, if you can read the guide. You can translate this URL via google translate.
it works before but now when I click “send phone data”, the phone just turns off immediately. is there any problem with my phone now? how come it works before not anymore?
I got everythinh fine, but where do I download the Samsung CDMA Modem thing, because it tries to download it on my computer, but it says I need some kind of software to download it.
@Kist2008
I honestly have no clue. It could be from an update, but I don’t know.
@Anna
The Samsung USB Drivers is enclosed in a normal zip file, which means it’s compressed. Windows comes with a built-in uncompressor. You need to open the zip file and extract all the files to a place you deem fit. Then run the setup. There should be no other program necessary to do this action.
I cannot remove ringtones I have made from my phone. I have followed the directions above as well as the troubleshooting in BitPim. And I still cannot delete the ringtones I no longer want off my phone, how can I do this?
Thanks!
On the part where it says:
“7. Your not done with this yet. In the BitPim Settings window, across from where it says Com Port click “Browse…” and choose “SAMSUNG CDMA Modem Diagnostic Serial Port (WDM)”.”
The only com ports I can choose are:
Automatic
AC97 Data Fax SoftModem with SmartCP
USB Serial Port (COM 4)
USB Serial Port (COM 5)
PANTECH PC Card
PANTECH PC Card Diagnostic Serial Port (WDM) (COM 7)
And I thought it would be the last one…but it wasn’t and on every single one I choose…and I try to receive my phone data and it will pop up with something saying…
“COM(w/e #): Could not open port: (2, ‘CreateFile’, ‘The system cannot find the file specified.’)
Help please?
@Luka
I’m sorry, I don’t think I know what the problem is. All I know what to do is to remove them via BitPim and applying it.
@jordanlol
Sounds to me like you either didn’t install the Samsung drivers, or you didn’t set the phone into MSM mode. If you did install the drivers, try restarting and setting the phone into MSM mode. If you had the phone in MSM mode, try checking to make sure you have the drivers installed.
Hmm… You may be onto something… lol…how do I install the drivers? ..And yes, I had put the phone into MSM mode…
@jordanlol
Please refer the Windows Guide (assuming you are running Windows) and Step 2-1 (Downloading the Software specifically “Samsung CDMA”), as well as Step 3-1 (Installing the “Samsung CDMA”).
If your running a Mac and using Leopard please refer to the Mac portion of the guide and the entirety of Step 3.
Aww…thanks so much Localretard! lol…I had a lil trouble figuring out how Audacity works…but I got it down…thanks so much for your help man… great guide!
And, yes, I was using Windows
Great Guide!
The only thing is my ring tone mp3 volume is very quiet when someone calls (vol on high), but it sounds fine when playing it in the ringtone menu selection.
Why is that?
Fixed…I needed to close the phone first to maximize the volume
