Harvey Milk – Life…The Best Game In Town

The only people I’ve met who have heard this band, are the hardcore fans. You’ve either heard this band or you haven’t. Harvey Milk hails from Athens, GA…the spawning grounds for many popular artists like R.E.M. and the B-52’s. With the history of Athens behind them you think that a band who has been around since ‘92, would receive some credit.
Only now is the band starting to gain recognition. The band name Harvey Milk comes from the man, who was the first openly gay man to be elected to a public office in California. However neither the band’s member’s sexual orientation nor the music fit the term gay. It is probably the most brutal, heart-wrenching music you could ever listen to…especially their early LP’s.
Harvey Milk, the band, was active from ‘92 until ‘98 when they disbanded for almost a decade, coming back in ‘06 to release “Special Wishes”. Two years later, they released this LP “Life…The Best Game In Town”. The difference being on this release the band recruited Stoner Metal extraordinaire, Joe Preston. Preston was in the ever influential The Melvins, Earth, High on Fire, Sunn O))) and his own solo project Thrones.
Take a listen to Harvey Milk, especially if you happen to be a fan of Doom and Stoner metal.

Man, I always forget how many great bands Joe Freakin’ Preston was in! And he signed our magazines, dude!
Anyways: Nice review. I might wish that there was a little more about the music rather than the history of the band, but I’m all for spreading the word about the great Harvey Milk.
And big update for the Greater Atlanta Area! Harvey Milk is going to be playing at the Masquerade on Saturday, February 28th and guess what? It’s free! Plus there’s a bunch of other great bands: Boris (Local, I know you love them), Mastodon, High on Fire, Cryptopsy, Pig Destroyer, and a whole bunch of others. Check it out @ http://www.scion.com/rock/
